Caption - Benguela Railway (Caminho de Ferros Benguela - CFB) Class 10a (3rd series) 4-8-2+2-8-4 Garratt 348 (Beyer-Peacock 7398/52) photographed in 1973 at Silva Porto. This was an impressive 3-foot 6-inch gauge railway running from the coast at Lobito Bay 1346 km to the border with Zaire. Eucalyptus wood was used as fuel with large plantations cultivated near the railway. Sadly, Angola, a Portuguese colony, succumbed to civil war and it is assumed that none of these handsome locomotives survived.
