Usina Barreiros sugar mill steam locos

Usina Barreiros sugar mill had limited railway operations at the time of this visit including no.10 a Bagnall loco from 1950. In 1978 interesting locos were still to be found on the sugar estates in the area west of Recife in Brazil. Motive power was often very varied with European designed and built locos operating alongside their US built counterparts. At Usina Barreiros, as was often the case when visiting these sugar mills, there was very little work for steam with most transport of cane from the fields given over to road transport. Nevertheless, the visit allowed me to see their metre gauge locomotives which are all featured in this gallery.
