Caption - VFCO 4-6-0 42 (Baldwin 1912) leaves São João del Rey with a ballast train in 1978. This wonderful 2 foot 6 inch gauge system saw very little traffic at this time with much of the system already closed. The train is seen on the sole remaining line to Aureliano Mourão, where it connected with the metre gauge main line. Also in use in 1978 were examples of 4-4-0, 4-6-0 and 2-8-0 wheel arrangements. Today a small part of the railway is preserved with regular steam operation.
