EAR Class 59 4-8-2 Garratt 5918 "Mount Gelai" at Mombasa
Caption - East African Railways (EAR) metre gauge Class 59 4-8-2 Garratt 5918 "Mount Gelai" (Beyer Peacock 7649/55) at Mombasa loco shed in December 1970. This image pre-dates the period when Kirpal Singh and Walter Pinto were the regular drivers. The journey time to Nairobi was 24 hours and each train had a crew caboose where the drivers could rest between shifts on the footplate. Today 5918 is preserved at Nairobi Railway Museum.
