Two gauges at St Polten

St Polten lies on the mainline running west from Vienna to Linz and Salzburg. In addition there is an electrified branch north to Tulin and Vienna FJB and a diesel worked branch south to Traisen. Also of interest is the electrified 760mm Mariazellerbahn running south to Mariazell. At this time of the visit the narrow gauge was diesel operated due to ongoing works improving the overhead and supply ready for new trains in 2013/14. Traffic through the station was quite busy although a new avoiding line under construction will reduce freight traffic. Just west of the station is a small loco depot with a roundhouse.
