Initially purchased for working over Sir Lowry's Pass from Cape Town they were not a success and were moved to Natal and worked from Stanger. Later in their working life a couple were used on the Port Alfred branch and a few years later two worked from Port Elizabeth on local goods trains. All the class were withdrawn by `1972.
