Chiayi steam loco shed

Taiwan - 1978

A visit to Chiayi loco shed saw many steam locos of Japanese origin. With the end of steam about a year away, Chiayi roundhouse was still full of well-maintained locos. All the steam locos in use on Taiwan Railway Administration's 3'6" gauge system were of Japanese origin having been imported to the island of Taiwan during the 50 year long occupation by Japan. Representatives of some of the most iconic Japanese steam locos were being used intensively on the mainline south from Taipei to Kaohsiung on a variety of passenger and freight services.
