Porto's historic trams

Portugal - 2013

Porto, Portugal's second city, was once home to a large tram system worked by a wonderful collection of historic trams. The trams were always well maintained and despite their age clattered their way around the streets. A few minutes observation in the city centre would mean an almost constant stream of trams parading past. Sadly those halcyon days are gone but there remains at least a flavour of the old system with three tourist tram routes still in operation. The routes interconnect and you can spend an interesting morning exploring the system. Fully restored trams are used and these are operated from the depot adjacent to the Tramway Museum on the banks of the River Douro.
