The railways serving collieries in the Transvaal had a wonderful selection of steam locos in operation. Some were porchased new with some second-hand from SAR. The locos acquired from South African Railways were of particular interest as they often belonged to classes that had been extinct for many years on the main lines working way beyond their anticipated life span. Many of the steam locos were kept in good condition and sported colourful liveries in line with their owners' corporate colours.Others looked rather unkempt and workmanlike.
