Lunchtime trains at Budapest Keleti

Hungary - 2012

Budapest Keleti railway station (Budapest Keleti pályaudvar) is the main international and inter-city railway terminal in Budapest, Hungary and sees considerable traffic the majority of which is loco-hauled. The building was constructed between 1881 and 1884 and was one of the most modern railway stations of Europe in that time. The main façade is adorned with two statues of James Watt and George Stephenson, which shows the significance that British railway engineers had at the time. These images were taken at lunchtime. Photography is probably best in the morning until early afternoon. Traffic within Hungary is the main focus of operation although the station sees considerable international traffic from surrounding countries. There is a considerable amount of shunting with three station pilots kept busy for most of the day. Coaching stock is very varied with examples from Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Russia, Ukraine, Romania, Austria and Serbia (to name a few) all seen on services from this station.
