Steam special from Zell am See

Austria - 2012

The Pinzgauer Lokalbahn runs from the main line at Zell am See some 52.7 km to Krimml. The gauge is 760 mm. Until 2008 the line was operated by Austrian Railways but since takeover the Salzburger Lokalbahn has invested in modernisation. In summer months a steam service is operated along the full length of the line to Krimml each Thursday. Departure from Zell am See is at 0918 and returning in the afternoon. The train stands at Mittersill to allow service trains to cross and overtake on the single track line. In 2012 the loco in use was Mh3 which was 399.03 when owned by Austrian Railways. The loco is an interesting example of an Engerth articulated with a wheel arrangement of 0-8+4. The Engerth design articulated the tender with the main locomotive frame, allowing some of the weight of the fuel and water to be carried on the driving wheels to improve adhesion.
