Kuustram along the coast

Belgium - 2011

The Coast Tram or De Kusttram in Dutch is a metre gauge tramway connecting the cities and towns along the entire West Flanders coast in Belgium. The line runs from the De Panne near the French border in the south and Knokke-Heist close to the Dutch border in the north. With a length of 68 km (42 miles), it is the longest tram line in the world and is one of the few interurban tramways in the world to remain in operation. Electrified at 600 V d.c. the service is operated by modern trams which are under the control of Vlaamse Vervoersmaatschappij De Lijn or the Flemish Transport Company De Lijn. All these images were taken at the small resort of De Haan (Le Coq in French) which is famous for its Belle poque architecture. The tram station is also well preserved retaining its character.
