Antique trams in Porto

Portugal - 1977

The trams in Portugal's second city were a reminder of the past even in the 1970s when most of the trams dated from before 1940 with some having been built as long ago as 1912. Obviously in the intervening years there had been considerable rebuilding but the character of the trams remained intact. What was noticeable was that there were no modern trams and this made the street scenes that more authentic. Today the tramway is still open but in a much different guise than depicted with fewer routes and a much reduced fleet of older vehicles.
