Springs steam loco shed

South Africa - 1979

Located to the east of Johannesburg, Springs provided motive power for many local shunts and trip workings in an area dominated by coal trains. Most of the allocation were 15F class 4-8-2s. At the time of this visit there was also a class 12R 4-8-2 and an S2 class 0-8-0 awaiting disposal. This visit was made on a Sunday afternoon when virtually all of the allocation was on shed. Work was under way lighting fires and getting ready for Monday morning when the shed would empty quickly as the railway got back to normal weekday working.
