Ooty rack railway - part 1

India - 2008

The steam operated rack railway from Mettupalayam to Ooty has world heritage status and climbs from the plains of Tamil Nadu into the Blue Mountains with the first section to Cooner steam operated with X class 0-8-2Ts. The line was prone to closure after heavy monsoons and the Southern Railway (India) often had to rebuild sections of track after heavy rain. The final section from Coonor to Ooty is operated by diesels but there has been pressure for this to revert to steam. This may be possible with four new steam locos being introduced from 2011.
