Malakwal was a wonderful place to watch steam locos with most passenger traffic in the hands of SPS class 4-4-0s and SGS and SGC class 0-6-0s. With a number of branch lines the station was quite busy. The loco shed was loacted south of the station where a number of derelict locos were stored in addition to regular maintenance activity of the working roster. With all the steam locos being quite elederly the fitters had a busy time keeping the ageing 4-4-0s and 0-6-0s in traffic.
