Caption - An unidentified South African Railways class 25 4-8-4 heads the southbound Orange Express at Kraankuil between Kimberley and De Aar in August 1982. With a load of 17 coaches the train has recently departed Oarange River where the loco had its fires cleaned and the tender topped with water. On departure the loco faced a starting gradient of 1 in 80 (1.25%) which eased slightly before passing Kraankuil after 15 miles (25 km) at about 80 km/h. Impressive.
