SAR class 26 4-8-4 3450 "L D Porta" at Beaconsfield
Caption - South African Railways (SAR) Cape gauge class 26 4-8-4 3450 "L D Porta" at Beaconsfield shed (Kimberley) in August 1982. Known as thew the Red Devil was a much modified class 25NC designed by Wardale, who was determined to show the efficiency of steam locomotives could be increased by using a Gas Producer Combustion System (GPCS) to produce more steam for less fuel consumed using the Lempor exhaust system developed by Argentinian L.D. Porta. It did prove to be more efficient and more powerful but was too late to stop the elimination of steam.
