Caption - South African Railways (SAR) Cape gauge GMA class 4-8-2+2-8-4 Garratt 4129 with a Mosselbaai to Oudtshoorn goods at Montagu Pass in October 1979. The climb from George was about 540 metres (1880 feet) on a steeply graded line with many sections of tight curvature. The mechanical stoker would have been going during most of the ascent with only a short distance until the train began a steady descent to Oudtshoorn.
