Caption - Alishan Forest Railway 18-ton 2-cylinder two truck Shay no. 17 at Alishan depot in February 1978. The depot also contained no.12 which had been used a few days earlier. This 86 km. long two-foot 6-inch gauge railway from the mainline near Chiayi features spirals and reversals, plus many tunnels and bridges. No.17 was one of 12 28-ton shays built by Lima (USA) and delivered between 1912 and 1918 to improve timber extraction. Today the line is a popular tourist railway with one Shay occasionally used for special trains.
