EAR class 31 2-8-4 3124 "Chope" with Kisumu to Butere passenger
Caption - East African Railways (EAR) metre gauge class 31 2-8-4 3124 "Chope" (Vulcan Foundry 6250/55) heads the morning passenger 7-coach train from Kisumu, on the shores of Lake Victoria, across the Equator to Butere near the border with Uganda. Forty-six of these oil burners were built for lighter laid branch lines across the system. The image was taken in December 1977 and this was the last steam hauled passenger service in Kenya.
