Ninety-three of these heavy locos were built by William Beardmore and Vulcan Foundry in the UK. 58 locos were delivered in 1928 and 1930 with another batch of 24 being delivered in 1945 and classified XE/1. The pre-war locos were all used on the Eastern Railway whilst the post war examples saw service on the Western and Southern Railways. By 1977 only 56 locos remained in service. The Eastern Railways examples were based primarily at Asansol with a few at Andal and Jhaja. The Southern Railway examples could be found at Jolarpettai and Erode with Kota the only depot using this class on the Western Railway.
