Caption - French Railways (SNCF) 4-cylinder compound 4-6-2 231-D-796 is immaculate condition when photographed in August 1964. The French Pacifics were fine machines and capable of hauling heavy trains on demanding schedules. I remember seeing them for the first time in 1963 and was amazed at their superb design and elegant lined livery.
