Caption - South African Railways (SAR) class 16E 4-6-2 no.854 at Bloemfontein in October 1968. This class of 6 locos was built by Henschel in 1935. Their 6 feet driving wheels were the largest on any sub-standard gauge loco in the world. Initially allocated to Kimberley, the introduction of heavier trains forced their move to Bloemfontein where they stayed until withdrawal in 1972. Like many South African locos, 854 is in immaculate condition despite 55 years of service.
