South African Railways 12A class 4-8-2 1524 at De Aar
Caption - South African Railways (SAR) 12A class 4-8-2 1524 under the coal stage at De Aar in May 1982. Looking worked stained and unglamorous this loco was one of 12A's that wasn't rebuilt with Loubser boiler and Watson style cab. The class eventually numbered some 75 locos of which 44 were reboilered and became class 12AR. This particular loco was one of the first batch built by North British in Glasgow during 1919 and would have spent its later years shunting yards and working trip freights.
