Southern Railway (India) WP class 4-6-2 7224 at Mettupalayam
Caption - Southern Railway (India) WP class 4-6-2 7224 stands at Mettupalayam in March 1978 and is ready to take the Nilagiri Express to Madras as far as Erode where the loco is based. The WP class Pacifics were always a favourite of mine. The class was introduced in 1947 with an initial batch of 16 prototype locos from Baldwin in the USA. Construction lasted until 1967 by which time 755 locos had been constructed. The entire class lasted into the 1980s and although some were in poor condition, Erode shed had a reputation for turning out immaculate engines in the pleasant Southern Railway livery.
