Caption - Italian State Railways (FS - Ferrovie dello Stato) class 740 2-8-0 740.256 pauses during shunting at Sparanise about 40 km northwest of Naples in July 1976. Built between 1911 and 1923 this was the largest class of locos built for Italian State Railways with 470 examples constructed. They lasted until the end of steam in the early 1990's. Like most Italian locos, they looked light-weight but were excellent performers on freight trains although at the end of their working lives were relegated to lesser duties.
