Chinese Railways QJ class 2-10-2 665 at Nan Kuo depot in 1980
Caption - Chinese Railways QJ class 2-10-2 665 at Nan Kuo depot, close to the Great Wall north of Beijing. Taken in November 1980, this was the first Chinese steam loco I had seen. The first pre-production batch of 42 QJ class locos were built between 1956 and 1960. Full production started in 1964 and was to continue until 1988. During this time more than 4700 locos were produced. A week or so later I visited the factory In Datong which produced most of the class and saw brand new engines leaving the production line!
