Caption - VFCO 4-6-0 42 (Baldwin 1912) leaves São João del Rey with a ballast train in 1978. This superb Brazilian 2 foot 6 inch gauge system reached a zenith with 482 miles of route. By the time of this visit much of the system had closed and there was an air of dereliction about the railway. Only the line from São João del Rey to Aureliano Mourão, where it met the metre gauge main line, was in operation. Thankfully examples of 4-4-0, 4-6-0 and 2-8-0 wheel arrangements were still in steam and based at the roofless roundhouse at São João del Rey. Today a small part of the railway is preserved with regular steam operation.
