Caption - South African Railways (SAR) modified 19D class 4-8-2 2644 is seen at Mafeking loco depot in May 1980. It was the precursor of the class 26 with modifications undertaken by SAR mechanical engineer David Wardale. This work was done, essentially as a test bed, prior to rebuilding a Class 25NC 4-8-4 locomotive to the Class 26 Red Devil in 1979. A gas producer combustion system and dual Lempor exhaust were installed together with other minor improvements. The resulting gain in performance was an encouraging 25%. However, despite the best efforts of Wardale, this was not enough to save steam power from withdrawal. Despite being initially saved from the scrapyard, extensive vandalism to the stored loco meant it was scrapped in 2014.
