Steam near Lake Victoria

Kenya - 1977

The Kenyan division of East African Railways used a variety of locomotives in the late 1970s including some 4-8-0 tender engines and some handsome 2-8-4Ts. Most traffic at the time was operated by 2-8-2s or two classes of Garratt. This series of images were taken around Kisumu both on the mainline to Nairobi and on the branch to Butere. At this time there was still considerable traffic and some trains on the mainline to Nankuyu (and Nairobi) were double-headed with class 24 4-8-0s being used as pilot locos.
