Sofia station afternoon trains

Bulgaria - 2014

Sofia station was undergoing extensive reconstruction at the time of the visit. The station is the main hub for Bulgarian Railways passenger operations with the majority of services still loco hauled. However there are modern EMUs in service too with some older Lemus still operating peak hour trains. The station has three shunters for marshalling coaches which adds to the activity which can be very sparse at times. Freight trains were few in number although one light engine of an ex British Railways class 87 was nice to see as they once worked the line a few hundred metres from where I lived.
