Trains at Bratislava Hlavna Stanica

Slovakia - 2012

Railway infrastructure in Slovakia is under the control of ZSR. Passenger trains are the responsibility of ZSSK with freight operated by ZSCS. This was my first visit to Slovakian Railways and I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of loco-hauled passenger trains many of which were the hands of class 240 Bo-Bo electrics which are approaching 45 years old. As can be expected many of the loco types are also seen in the Czech Republic as the system were unified when the two countries were Czechoslovakia. Slovakian Railways seem to have relatively low levels of investment in recent years with many locos and coaches in relative poor external repair. However progress is being made and in a few years time you can expect to see fewer liveries as stock is gradually repainted. Locos are generally of Skoda manufacture and follow the simple external designs they have developed in recent decades. Bratislava Hlavna Stanica (main station) does see fairly frequent passenger traffic and the odd freight train. International trains link Slovakia with Hungary, the Czech Republic and Austria. Finally I am pleased to say there were no problems encountered when photographing trains at the station.
