Trains in the rain at Salzburg

Austria - 2012

Salzburg lies on the main east-west trunk line between Vienna and Bregenz and is an important junction with the route into Germany and Munich. Traffic is busy with passenger traffic predominating although there are also some freight trains. At the time of the visit (April 2012) the station was under re-construction with work more than 50% complete. Underneath the main station is the terminus of the metre gauge electrified Salzburger Lokalbahn which is worth exploring for a few minutes. In 2012 more than half the trains were loco-hauled with Austrian Railways using a variety of classes with Deutsche Bahn locos on some services too. Also to be seen are the 1163 class Bo-Bo shunters plus diesels from a number of classes.
